Although weakened, Burt still managed to regularly garden, attend Oak Ridge Country Club parties and travel to California. Burt's bravery was evident as he kept up his active lifestyle for as long as possible. He began his courageous battle against the disease by seeking treatment at one of the top myeloma treatment centers in the world, the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota where Burt was willing to try many difficult and experimental therapies. In 2002 Burt developed the first signs of multiple myeloma, an incurable cancer of the bone marrow. He played every day, fine-tuning his swing through continuous lessons and even became the president of the B'nai Brith Golf League. Although he was never much of an athlete, golf became Burt's daily focus and he strived to become a better player. Burt not only developed an interest in art, but also became passionate about golfing. As a young retiree at age 55, Burt found ways to channel his considerable energy and competitiveness. At the time, Lyndale was the largest single standing retail lawn and garden store in the country. After Siegel unexpectedly died in 1985, Lyndale Garden Center was sold to Tim Duuos.
In 1981 the store was destroyed in a fire and Burt and his partner/ brother-in-law, Palmer Siegel, rebuilt Lyndale Garden Center into a gigantic superstore. A few years later the store moved to its permanent location on Lyndale Avenue in Richfield and took the name Lyndale Garden Center, becoming a Twin Cities landmark known for its huge flower selection, giant fruit and vegetable market, "Pete" the Halloween talking pumpkin, elaborate Christmas displays and especially Burt's mother "Ma" sitting behind the cash register. Along with sister Sandra, Burt helped his parents start a small fruit stand on Hiawatha Avenue in Minneapolis in 1955. Then in March 1957 Burt married Marlene Langer and had three children, Paula, Caren and Daniel. Burt was proud to be a graduate of Minneapolis North High School in 1949 and receive an accounting degree from the University of Minnesota in 1954. A lifelong resident of Minneapolis, Burt was born in North Minneapolis in 1931 to poor Russian immigrant parents Sam and Belle Rutman. In addition, Burt is survived by five grandchildren, Ryan and Julia Schwartz, Benjamin and Sarah Kiner and Noah Rutman. He is survived by his wife of more than 49 years, Marlene Langer Rutman, children Paula Schwartz (Doug) of Granada Hills CA, Caren Kiner (Seth) of Oak Park CA, and Daniel Rutman (Andrea Weisberg) of Edina, and sister Sandra Siegel of Pacific Palisades CA. He is preceded in death by parents Sam and Belle Rutman, and brother-in-law Palmer Siegel. Rutman, Burton Age 75 of Eden Prairie, passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2006, after a valiant battle with cancer.
